What is Baby-led weaning?

Baby-led weaning is a method of helping your baby learn to eat by allowing him/her to bring real, whole foods to their mouth to explore--bite, lick, suck and gnaw.

This concept was originally developed and coined by Gill Rapley, a former public health nurse in the U.K. BLW initially called “letting your child feed themselves from the very start of weaning” Whatever the family is eating the baby is offered opportunities to explore as well. The food is given to the baby and they are to grab and bring to their mouths themselves.

What are the benefits of Baby-led Weaning?

Baby-led weaning helps you raise an independent eater that is in control of how much to eat and also learns to stop when full. This approach allows baby the opportunity to practice critical motor and oral skills by providing a FUN sensory experience while also giving your baby the repetition to develop skills and meet milestones. You are offering your baby REAL wholesome food that you eat at the table together as a family, which means no pricey special baby foods are required. Baby-led weaning helps prevent picking eating as baby can eat a variety of tastes, textures and flavors. Most importantly, baby-led weaning allows your baby to develop a healthy relationship with food.
